6 factors to assess the effectiveness of online learning

  1. How strong is the wifi?

When Covid struck, I immediately needed to conduct my lesson using Zoom at home. Being an IT idiot, I tried. But the first hurdle was “Oh no, why my laptop is so laggy?” It took me a week or two to settle all these issues: (a) upgrade the router (b) move my laptop nearer to the router (c) other technical stuff guided by a close friend.

  2. Knowledge or Skills development?

In general, knowledge-based development is more suitable than skills-based development.

  3. How old are the learners?

Most people think that online learning is suitable for adults but not children. Probably 50% of the people think that it is suitable for teenagers and the other 50% think otherwise.

  4. What is the level of self-regulation?

Instead of using age as a guide, I prefer to assess through the lens of 'self-regulation’. For example, a 17-year-old youth may be watching a youtube video while attending the lesson but my 8-year-old Tze Yu is able to fully engage the teacher and the lesson.

  5. What are the technologies available?

Some technological platforms are very user-friendly and engaging while others fail miserably.

  6. How competent are the teachers using the online platform?

I personally know a number of very professional trainers and teachers who conduct excellent physical lessons but a terrible in online lessons.

I would love to hear your comments.
