Learning Dialects in Singapore
I was brought up in an environment that allows me to understand 5 dialects. But I was able to speak proficiently only Hokkien and Cantonese. By this generation, most children will not be able to understand dialects, let alone speak.
I, therefore, attempted to train Tze Yu in dialects with simple reciting of the Chinese Zodiac I learned from my mum.
When he turned 6 years old, he learned 2 classic dialect songs; 爱拼才会赢 in Hokkien and 上海滩 in Cantonese.
As a Singaporean male, he is now equipped with great tradition; Hokkien Army song.
After more than 2 years, I must admit that he did not progress further from these few songs. The main reasons are:
1) Language needs environment; without immersion, there shall be erosion.
2) His passion and excitement changed; he used to like the dialect learning process but not anymore.
I would love to hear your insights regarding “Learning dialects for the next generation.”
